Visit to Temple in India..question about Gift I received from the preist.?

October 6th, 2010

I visited a Hindu temple for the goddess Durga the night before I was to have a wedding and reception. We were already married in America..but we always wanted to have a wedding in India too! I was wearing my wedding henna and had not even removed the paste yet..though it was dry.My husband Is from India and I’m a white American.I am a Christian..even though my husband says i’m a Hindu because I married him…I guess he is a Christian also because he married me..hahaha..not relevant info.

After praying, the priest gifted me the dupatta that the goddess was wearing. After we returned home there was a massive house party with his family and neighbors as part of the bachelors night. There was a lot interest and buzz about my gift.None of his family had ever heard of someone receiving the clothes of the god but they thought it was something to be excited about and thought of me as a very blessed person . Some people looked totally shocked and and raised their eye brows like I might have magical powers or something.

Does this gift have a special meaning according to hinduism? Have you ever heard of this? Thanks so much!

I can’t say if it has special significance but it sounds as if it did to the particular community. The dupatta is traditional wedding wear, sometimes given by the groom’s family. Perhaps the priest thought that your wedding was special, coming, as you do, from a different religion and culture.

It is heartwarming to hear of a couple that can put aside religious differences and I wish you and your husband the best.
