July 3rd, 2011

Hi.

I am a recent highshcool graduate. I know that I love to organize events be it Summer Reading Programs, Volunteer Projects and other events. I know that the an obvious career is a planner.

What would you reccomend for a degree.?? I dont want to be ONLY a wedding planner or party planner.
Are there any more “professional” jobs for person who likes to organize?

Degree plan and career.

Thanks for your help.

You could look at Corporate event management. A number of large organisations hire people to organise networking events, training events or team bonding activities.

Or you could think about hospitality management, working for a hotel arranging all their events, this would be varied and interesting.

You might want to consider contacting a local hotel and getting some work experience first.

Cornell University has a degree in Hotel Management that would be good if you wanted to pursue planning large events.

Large companies that participate in expo-type events use people for setup and planning.

Convention centers also provide services for a variety of events, not just weddings or parties.

Chamber of Commerce plans get togethers and organizes mixers and meetings of many sorts.

My gut feeling for you would be to pursue the hotel management degree, get a job with a large hotel chain and be their event planner. In the meantime, plan as many parties, weddings and events as you can because experience is a valuable commodity. Keep track of all you do and put in on your resume.
