Please Read!!! Fiance scared of the hours that I work for my Family business!?

May 16th, 2011

I have a bit of a dilemma. I just recently got engaged and we are in the midst of planning a wedding.

I work for my family’s business which is now run by my uncle, in NYC. My uncle is a workaholic and expects a similar work ethic out of me.
He is extremely successful and still manages to have a great relationship with my aunt and his kids. I often work 12 hour days during the week and almost every Saturday until 4:30PM
While this is not fun at all for me, and is not fun for my fiance who works for an advertising firm and whose work week is Mon-Thurs ( 10Am-4PM) and has 4 weeks of vacation plus
tons and tons of random days off during the year. She had voiced her upset with my schedule a few times before, but nothing too drastic.
Her father seems to be happy with the hours I work and always says to me ” I am very proud of you, you know to how to provide for my daughter and
since I met you I could see you are a go-getter”. Her mother feels that my family is overworking me and feels that I am going to get burnt out.

Yesterday, my fiance had a complete breakdown and started sobbing and told me ” I don;t know if I could marry someone who is not home that much
and who will not be around to see our kids grow up one day”
I make a great living working with my uncle and made sure I bought her a beatiful enagagement ring and take her away on vacations.

How do I handle this? I am worried

Maybe you can work less and be home more with her

Can you cut back on the work hours? Its not about what you give her or where you take her. Its about her having someone there to spend the time with. If she doesnt see you, its almost like shes marrying herself.

You could cut your hours by like one hour a day so you can work from 5:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
