Can we recover money from the bank that we used to pay a fraudulent vendor?

April 22nd, 2010

We hired a wedding vendor and paid with a debit card. They have proven to be thieves. They have been sued left and right and have even been on the news. They have also voided the contract we signed because they failed to perform services.

Can anyone tell me if it’s possible to recover the money from our bank since we paid with a debit card?

It depends on your bank’s policies. With a credit card you usually have more recourse. Read the Terms & Conditions that came with your debit card.

You can only a claim file a claim on your debit card if the transaction is fraudulent or unauthorized. In your particular case, it sounds like you are involved in a scam/dispute. The debit card doesnt necessarily cover this.

In my city, we have a free service provided by the county for in-town disputes. You can also go to small claims court which is usually fast and inexpensive. Last but ot the least, dont forget to submit a BBB report!
